Tips for Finding Availability – Tips to Secure Your Machu Picchu Entry

  • Do not procrastinate. A large number of available tickets can sell out in a few minutes. Make your reservation well in advance.
  • Keep in mind that at the same time you are viewing online availability, many agencies and people from different parts of the world are reserving those spots.
  • Some agencies buy Machu Picchu tickets for large groups; therefore, it is not uncommon for 40 spaces to be taken within 10 minutes.
  • Tickets for Machu Picchu Classic Circuit or Classic Designed (Route 2A) and Machu Picchu Classic Circuit or Lower Terrace (Route 2B) often sell out faster, so it is recommended to book online two to three months in advance.
  • Although rare, there are cases where a reservation is canceled due to lack of payment. In those cases, the ticket will become available again for you.

About Availability – Why is there limited availability for Machu Picchu?

  • As a protection and conservation measure, only a limited number of visitors can access Machu Picchu and its mountains daily.
  • The entry time to the Inca city depends on the type of ticket purchased. You must consider the entry schedules for shifts and groups according to your ticket type.
  • The paths leading to the top of Huayna Picchu are narrow. Therefore, for safety reasons, access is restricted to approximately 200 visitors per day.
  • Machu Picchu Mountain has wider but more challenging trails than Waynapicchu. To safeguard visitors’ safety, only 400 people per day are allowed to enter on average.
  • Additionally, the authorities of the Ministry of Culture of Peru have created alternative routes to Huchuy Picchu Mountain, Inti Punku (the Sun Gate), the Great Cave, and the Inca Bridge. Access to these hiking routes is only available during the high tourist season (from June 19 to November 2).
