Climate and weather forecast in Choquequirao
Choquequirao (3,035 m.a.s.l.) is an archaeological site known as “Machu Picchu’s sacred sister” due to its similarity to the Wonder of the World. It is located in the southern Andes of Peru, between the departments of Cusco and Apurimac. Due to its hidden location in a mountain of difficult access, getting there is only possible with a trekking route. This route is known as the Choquequirao Trek.

The Choquequirao archaeological site has a temperate climate. During the day, temperatures reach a maximum of 25ºC. While at night, the cold can drop to a minimum of 4ºC. The average temperature is 14ºC.
Choquequirao in the dry season (April to October)
During the months of April to October is the dry season in Choquequirao. In those days, the weather is warmer during the day and cooler at night. Rainfall is very infrequent. The temperature oscillates between 25ºC. and 4ºC.
Choquequirao during the rainy season (from November to March)
The rainy season in Choquequirao runs from November to March. During those months, the climate is characterized by the greater frequency of fluvial precipitations. The maximum temperatures reach 23ºC. while the minimum temperature is 6ºC.
What is the weather like during the Choquequirao trek?
The Choquequirao Trek has a warmer climate due to the presence of the Apurimac Canyon (the deepest in America).
The hike begins in the town of Cachora (2,902). Then, it begins the descent through the Apurimac canyon until reaching its lowest point at the so-called ‘Playa Rosalina’ (1,900 m.a.s.l.). As you descend, the temperature increases. The second day we start the ascent to the archaeological site of Choquequirao (3,035 m.a.s.l.).
When is the best time to do the Choquequirao trek?
The best time to visit Choquequirao is during the dry season (April to October). Although the sun can be more intense during the hike, the almost complete absence of rain makes the tour more bearable.
