How is the visit to the Inca House in Machu Picchu?
The Inca House is one of the best stone constructions in Machu Picchu. As its name indicates, it was the resting place of the Inca emperor or his royal family during the sporadic visits to Machupicchu. It stands out for its granite stone enclosures with fine carvings and its own water supply. It has privileged views of the Inca citadel, its own bathroom, niches to place sacred objects of gold or silver and its proximity to the most important religious enclosure in the place, the Temple of the Sun. The House of the Inca can be visited only by taking circuit 3, also called circuit of the royalty of the temples of the lower part. It is one of the buildings little known by visitors because it is not included in circuit 2, the most traditional and classic in Machu Picchu. This site can be known through the ticket Machu Picchu Temples of the lower part, or also called Temples of Royalty.

The royal temples in Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu has more than one hundred and fifty stone constructions including temples, terraces, platforms, houses, workshops, roads and stairways. In addition, there are roads or trails that lead to its mountains.

The Inca precincts most visited by tourists are: the House of the Guardian, the Temple of the Sun (from a viewpoint at the top), the Main Temple, the Temple of the 3 Windows, the Sacred Rock, the Water Mirrors and the agricultural sector. Currently these Inca buildings can be visited through circuit 2 by Machu Picchu, the circuit that most people prefer.

However, there are other Inca constructions of great importance because they were part of the Inca royalty. These are: the Royal Tomb, the Temple of the Sun (tour of the central part), the House of the Inca and the Sacred Rock. These temples are also called temples of the lower part of Machu Picchu and are included in circuit 3 of the Inca citadel.

Learn more about these temples:

  • Royal Tomb – The Royal Tomb is a mysterious construction inside the cavern that makes up the Temple of the Sun. It is believed that the mummies of the highest Inca officials in Machu Picchu were buried there, including the mummy of the Inca Pachacutec. Liturgical objects of gold, silver and precious stones were found there. Today the tourist visit does not allow the entrance, only to appreciate the site from a safe distance.
  • Temple of the Sun – The Temple of the Sun was the most important religious precinct of Machu Picchu because it was the sun or god ‘Inti’, the main Inca divinity. It was the only enclosure built in a semicircular shape with windows that let the sun’s rays pass through. It also has niches to place golden objects, the symbol of the sun. Circuit 2 allows to appreciate the Temple of the Sun from above, in a viewpoint. Circuit 3 allows to appreciate it from the lower part.
  • Casa del Inca – The Casa del Inca was the occasional residence of the Inca emperor or his royal family during visits to Machu Picchu, at least once a year. It has fine stone walls divided into several rooms, such as bedroom, bathroom, living room and more. It is the only enclosure with privileged views of Machu Picchu and a location close to the Temple of the Sun, the main Inca religious site. Its visit is only possible through circuit 3 of Machu Picchu.
  • Temple of the Condor – The Temple of the Condor was the religious precinct that worshipped the Andean condor, considered one of the sacred animals in the Inca cosmovision. The condor was the messenger between the earthly world (the kai pacha) and the celestial world (the ukhu pacha). This enclosure has a central form that represents the body of the bird and a building at ground level that represents the head. The visit is only possible through circuit 3 of Machu Picchu.
