Restricted access to Machu Picchu Intihuatana
The Intihuatana (sundial) is one of the most popular constructions of Machu Picchu. It is famous for being located at the top of the religious sector of the archaeological site, where the sun’s rays fall on the granite bases. Thus, the Incas could predict the correct time for sowing or harvesting. A few years ago, visitors could access the Intihuatana and, by placing their hands on its base, they could be filled with the sun’s energy. However, since the last modifications in 2024, access to the Intihuatana is prohibited for all visitors. That is to say, there is no type of ticket or any circuit that allows the tour of this famous Inca construction. This is because the access road to the Intihuatana is very narrow and the number of visitors arriving there was too many. Thus, the Peruvian authorities decided to prohibit its access in order to protect it from possible deterioration in the future.
